Having known what prenatal care is all about, we should now look at how you can stay healthy during pregnancy:
You Should Eat Balanced Diet
You need to eat fruits and vegetables, remember to wash very well before eating.
Avoid foods that are half cooked or not properly cooked.
When it comes to sea foods, do not consume more than 3 servings of fish per day (both canned fish). Avoid eating king mackerel, shark, tile fish, sword fish as these fish contain high amount of mercury, which could cause harm your baby. Eat light tuna if you must eat tuna.
Diary provides calcium for you and you baby, therefore you need to eat more than 4 servings of it in a day. Avoid drinking unpasteurized milk or eating it’s products as could contain bacteria causing infection.
You can keep your blood sugar level up by consuming whole, healthy foods and lots of proteins. If you want to watch your sugar level, you could also take artificial sweeteners in moderation.
Do not take more than 2 cups of coffee or any caffeine contained drinks in a day.
Drink Lots Of Water
Water is very necessary to the health in general. It keeps you hydrated at all times. If you feel nauseated and can’t drink water, add one spoonful of sugar and a pinch of salt to the water. This will help rehydrate you quickly and relieve much of your nausea.
Avoid Self Medication
You should avoid self medication to the fullest during pregnancy. You must always consult your doctor before taking any medicine at all. Be it pain killers or which ever medicine you feel isn’t really harmful, avoid all. Always consult your doctor and tell him how you feel, he will prescribe the medication you should take. This precaution is to make sure that your baby is safe and free from danger because some of this medication could harm your baby and lead to birth defect without your knowing, especially when taken during the first three months of pregnancy.
You Should Get Enough Rest
Get enough rest as often as you can because rest is very necessary during pregnancy. You should try to sleep early and wake up as late as is convenient for you. Avoid waking up with alarm, because if your alarm wakes you up, it means you haven’t gotten enough sleep. Waking up on your own irrespective of the alarm is very necessary.
Hire An Experienced Mid Wife
If you are able to hire an experienced mid wife to stay and take care of you at home, it is a good idea. She will be able to tell you some dos and don’ts of pregnancy. You could also check some of the dos and don’ts here.
She will give you immediate attention as she is always there with you. She would also ensure you follow doctors instructions and do all necessary thing accordingly.
Vitamins are very necessary for every pregnant woman. Every pregnant woman should take at least 400 microgram of folic acid in a day. This will help protect your baby from brain and spinal cord problems. Your doctor will tell you if you need to take more than that. It is advisable that every woman starts taking folic acid before she even gets pregnant. Any other type of vitamin and supplements should be taking following your doctor’s instruction.
During pregnancy, you need to avoid stress to the fullest, take rest at all times. If you are a working class, you need to be aware and careful of your environment. Work environments exposed to lead, copper and mercury could be harmful to your baby. Also do not rest a computer on your uterus or stomach.
Exercise is very good for the health. Except you are having complications or the doctor has told you otherwise, you can exercise sometimes because it eases discomfort and keeps you healthy. It can also induce labor and ease delivery. Avoid exercises that could make you run the risk of falling. Always drink water to avoid getting dehydrated.
You can actually have sex during pregnancy. Just as I said earlier, you must always talk with your doctor, you could ask him to make sure you don’t run a risk of any complication while having sex during pregnancy.
In summary, in order to stay healthy during pregnancy, you must always consult your doctor when you notice any change in your body and when you have any kind of pain at all. You must also follow other laid down instructions here.
